Good bye 20′s HELLO 30!!!

I am stoked to have spent the second to last week of my 20′s in The Big Apple! (No one is counting here…)
I am headed home after 3 days at Bumble and bumble University and a total of 6 days in New York City! I have had 8 solid months of learning, teaching and inspiring as the Network Educator at 5th Element Salon since my last visit. I returned to the heart of it all to learn advanced hair styling in the Styling II class at Bb. University. I had been warned that this was going to be a very intense course. I am reporting back with real-life-actual-information after I sweated through the bobby pinning, hair spraying, hands-on course of ponytails, chignons (bun, if you are unfamiliar with the awkward word) and the-mountain-building double French twist. Now you are probably wondering how a ponytail or chignon and a double French twist could possibly make me sweat. I do work out regularly so this isn’t due to lack of fitness! I have to say I never knew that a ponytail or a bun could require such intensity, as many steps and so much focus. Notice that I failed to mention the double French twist in the previous sentence. Just imagine, really, the strongest possible foundation to literally build mountains on someone’s head. Now that’s difficult! That’s a double french twist. …And I passe! Now I have to brag. I not only passed, I received a huge compliment from my hands on educator Sabrina Michals! Btw, she is a Bb. editorial stylist who has completely inspired me previous to this class! Ohhhh, I’m lucky! Along with being at Bumble this week, just the simple fact of existing in one of the worlds most fashion forward and ‘anything goes’ cities was completely awesome!

Regardless of the sweat, stress and fear of blowing it this makes the closing of my 20′s quite exciting!

This girl, she is cool.

I look forward to the rainy Saturdays that are approaching us. Cold and rainy weather always makes a tasty coffee sound good so why not add a camera and a hot model? This is how I started my lovely Saturdays before work last winter. A little sparkle to start my day. Summer light and fun got in the way of our weekly meeting where we can gabble non stop until our hour time expires and we have to scramble to our perspective ‘real’ jobs. This mini shoot on a very early Saturday morning before Halloween shows us that even with some of the worst conditions – rain, hangovers, missing makeup and gloom can still turn into something great. I am stoked to have the opportunity to take pictures of this talented, intelligent woman along with styling her hair as my ‘real’ job.

Wednesday 7/18/2012: 10:38am

Am I there yet?! I woke up at 4:30 and have this incredible idea that if I stay awake the entire flight, then maybe, hopefully I will adjust to the time change. 4:30 west coast=7:30 east coast. I like the sounds of it. Fingers are crossed.

I won a free gogoinflight wifi pass for the flight (hopefully I’ll get the iPad too, but let’s not get greedy here). I am surrounded by children, who are all well behaved besides the grom sitting behind me using my seat as a kicking bag. I needed a massage anyways. I just found out that my credit card has been frozen… I mean really, why would a 29 yr. old woman living in Hood River be traveling to New York City using her C.C. to hold hotel reservations and buy tickets to Cirque du Soleil? I guess I’d rather have them be suspicious of Fraud than have to deal with a maxed out card when arrive.

Ok, so the REAL reason I am going to the Big Apple is to attend not 1 but 2 classes @ Bumble and bumble University! Thanks to 5th Element for selecting me as our Bumble Network Educator, giving me this incredible opportunity to travel to New York for an experience (there WILL be more) of a lifetime! My first class (which I happened to ‘win,’ -again thanks to 5th Element!) begins mañana is a Design Class, focusing on razor cuts #straightrazorsrscary. It is a two day class where I will be learning radness. My second class (4days) is the Network Educator Class where I will be learning the Bumble way… and how to teach it when I return to 5th Element Salon. I am super stoked to have this opportunity and plan to share it with all of you (whomever you might be). So keep your eyes peeled for more posts straight from NYC!

“Patience is a virtue.”

I heard quite a young boy say this the other day and I am not fully convinced he knew the correct usage of this saying. It has passed through my mind several times since making me think that there was a reason I heard these words. Yes. My release of Miss Candyland to the world has taken eons… really I have no idea why. This CoLab was a joint effort between myself and Ms. Magpie (Marissa Essex) for her school Mid-Term. For me, this was just a bit of fun to distract me from my usual day to day flow. I live for these special moments. Every shoot I am reminded why I love what I do and whom I am able to work with.

Back to PATIENCE…

The reality of it is that the entire process takes patience. You never know really what you are going to get. We lucked out majorly this time. Miss Candyland was the second and final shoot of the day, meaning that we had already had hours of hard work and practice on our patients by the time we pulled this make-shift dungeon studio photo shoot together.

It takes 2… plus some cotton candy, unicorns, cupcakes, sleeping beauties and a beautiful model to make magic. Magic? Why do I say this? Because our creation was truly magical. Just wait… You’ll see. Patience….

I want to thank everyone for their amazing time & PATIENCE. I hope you enjoy Miss Candyland as much as we have.

This is my current favorite recipe from 101 Cookbooks. Super simple and super flavorful. Enjoy!

Coconut Red Lentil Soup

See the photo in the main entry if you aren’t sure what type of lentils and split peas to buy. For those of you who are curious, I used the Terre Exotique Madras Curry Powder I picked up in Paris – it looks like it is available here now too (I think I’ve come across it on Amazon’s grocery section). Vegans – you can easily make this vegan by using coconut or olive oil in place of the butter called for.

1 cup / 7 oz / 200g yellow split peas
1 cup 7 oz / 200g red split lentils (masoor dal)
7 cups / 1.6 liters water
1 medium carrot, cut into 1/2-inch dice
2 tablespoons fresh peeled and minced ginger
2 tablespoons curry powder
2 tablespoons butter or ghee
8 green onions (scallions), thinly sliced
1/3 cup / 1.5 oz / 45g golden raisins
1/3 / 80 ml cup tomato paste
1 14-ounce can coconut milk
2 teaspoons fine grain sea salt
one small handful cilantro, chopped

cooked brown rice or farro, for serving (optional)

Give the split peas and lentils a good rinse – until they no longer put off murky water. Place them in an extra-large soup pot, cover with the water, and bring to a boil. Reduce heat to a simmer and add the carrot and 1/4 of the ginger. Cover and simmer for about 30 minutes, or until the split peas are soft.

In the meantime, in a small dry skillet or saucepan over low heat, toast the curry powder until it is quite fragrant. Be careful though, you don’t want to burn the curry powder, just toast it. Set aside. Place the butter in a pan over medium heat, add half of the green onions, the remaining ginger, and raisins. Saute for two minutes stirring constantly, then add the tomato paste and saute for another minute or two more.

Add the toasted curry powder to the tomato paste mixture, mix well, and then add this to the simmering soup along with the coconut milk and salt. Simmer, uncovered, for 20 minutes or so. The texture should thicken up, but you can play around with the consistency if you like by adding more water, a bit at a time, if you like. Or simmer longer for a thicker consistency. The thicker this soup got, the more I liked it.

I’ve been enjoying big ladles of this soup over ~1/2 cup of warm farro (leftover from this Farro & Bean Stew) – brown rice was good as well. Sprinkle each bowl generously with cilantro and the remaining green onions.

Serves 6.
